Here’s our dear Karma – Maria’s 2 year old Border Collie – ‘teaching’ a class. Now you know why our students always say all our instructors are fantastic!

Polishing Your Professional Image

Dear Murphy,
I’m drowning in email. It takes me hours every day to get through it and much of it is junk. The thing that really annoys me is people who Reply to All when only one or two people are interested in their reply. For example, when the boss sends an email to the whole team announcing a meeting and asking recipients to reply as to whether or not they will attend the meeting, a few people on the team always Reply to All. This information is of no interest to me and it clogs up my Inbox.

I think it’s bad manners not to consider the importance of other people’s time when it comes to email. What do you think, Murphy?

Dear Annoyed,
You’re right! It is poor manners not to respect other people’s busy schedules.

Reply to All is one of the biggest offenders regarding email. When replying to an email, one should carefully consider who needs to see the response and address the email accordingly. If a recipient does not have a business need to know, that person should not receive a reply.

I suggest you encourage the boss to have an email etiquette brainstorming session during a team meeting. The team can hammer out what they consider acceptable and unacceptable email behavior. It’s likely that many of your email communications are within your team, so by agreeing to some ground rules, you have the potential to have a positive impact on your Inbox traffic.
